about

South of the Bay of Biscay, North of the Iberian Peninsula, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is a unique place with incredible biodiversity. We have spent 4 weeks there and this album is our sonic journey from just before Dawn to late in the evening on a late Spring day.

The Bay of Biscay is part of the Atlantic Ocean. People say each ocean sounds different.
The Black Redstart is a small black bird, here it was calling, breaking the silence in the darkness from a vineyard close to the Urdaibai ‘International Bird Migration Airport’.
The Common Reed Warbler call is so complex, to our ears sounds like a scratchy record. When, as humans, we hear one sound only, birds may hear as many as 10 separate notes. Are you curious to hear how they do?
Dawn is one of our favourite moments, with its cacophony of bird calls coming from everywhere.
Don’t play around with a Coot, intruders are not welcome in their territory!
We like to sleep in the woods with our vehicles, where we can find some of the most beautiful encounters. One morning, a Black Woodpecker and its chicks were calling each other from a nest hole in a Eucalyptus tree. These trees are not from the Basque Country, their invasion takes over forests and vital habitats for native species.
Dusk’s coming and with it a thunderstorm. After this, we haven’t heard from or seen the Black Woodpecker again..
Just after dusk, Nightjars with their churring call, Tawny Owls hoots and Blackbird alarm calling because of the Tawnies make up for one of the busiest soundscapes of the day, just before the complete silence.
We have left a microphone 100 meters away from us for two weeks in the woods, to let wildlife get used to it. Wild Boars didn’t wait for too long before going close to eat, and possibly getting scared of it.

Thank you to the Urdaibai Bird Center for welcoming us warmly and for the collaboration, especially to Rowan Hardman who’s been incredible, believed in us and helped us shape the Sounding Wild Experience for the first time.
